Student and Postdoc Team Science Competition at the 2019 EFRC PI Meeting

Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are a significant component of the EFRC program. To highlight their accomplishments and further the development of the future scientific energy workforce, the Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) is sponsoring a Student and Postdoc Team Science Competition as part of the 2019 EFRC Principal Investigators’ Meeting. In addition to the regular talks per center, each Director is invited to nominate a team of two or more graduate student and/or postdoctoral researchers to present a joint talk about their center research.

Rules

  • Each Director may nominate one team of two or more graduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers to present a joint talk.
  • There must be two or more co-presenters per talk. Not all the team members need to be present.
  • The talks must focus on research primarily supported by the EFRC.
  • Talks will be integrated with the other center talks in the parallel technical sessions. Hence, they will be 20 minutes in length – 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for questions.
  • Finalists will be asked to submit a team photo for DOE to use in promoting this event.
  • Send the nomination template to Robin Hayes (Robin.Hayes@science.doe.gov) and your Color Team Lead by 11:59 pm Eastern time on April 8, 2019.

Selection of Finalists

  • BES anticipates that there will be 15 team finalists selected to give talks, but the exact number depends on all the submitted nominations.
  • Finalists will be selected by BES staff and notified within four weeks of the submission deadline.
  • Selection criteria include the following:
    • How well the research exemplifies the opportunities provided by the EFRC funding modality.
    • Scientific excellence.
    • Integration of research.
    • Topical diversity.

Selection of Awards

A panel of DOE judges will select the awardees based on the selection criteria given above and quality of the presentation.

The top presentations will be announced at the Poster Session, receive a certificate, and be featured on the www.energyfrontier.us website.
